What is a shipping container garage?

A shipping container garage is not far from a regular shipping container. In fact, the only significant difference is that it can be used as a garage for vehicles as well as a storage area.

How to construct a shipping container garage

While building a shipping container garage is as easy as such a task can be, there are a few factors that have to be considered before and during the construction.

Municipal permission

In most areas, building a garage is allowed, and no municipal permission is needed. However, in cases where you want to convert the garage into something else, a municipal authorization may be needed. Therefore, before you venture into converting your regular garage into a shipping container garage you need to find out if your area permits it or you need to get permission, you wouldn’t want to get into trouble with the authorities!

The Foundation

In order to prevent the container garage from sinking due to the weight of the items being stored inside, you first need to install a concrete stab that will act as the foundation.

This is how the stab is installed;

Once you have chosen the location and marked it, the first step is to flatten the ground. You can do this using a pressure roller. Make sure the terrain is either one inch or two below the level of the ground area surrounding it. While you do so, make sure no plants are left on the marked area. After doing so, then you need to create a frame all around the marked area. Do so by first using 12 inches by 2-inch boards. The corners of the boards should be fastened using three-inch nails. Then you ought to place a row of bricks along the edges of the frame. The bricks will hold the frame tightly in place while you pour concrete. And with that, you got yourself a foundation for your shipping container garage.

Installing the actual shipping container

This part will depend on the purpose of the shipping container garage. If the garage is meant to be an extension of your house to be used as an additional storage facility, then it needs to face the entrance to your home. On the other hand, if it is meant to be a garage for vehicles, then you will need to strategize a position that will be best suited for its purpose. You will also need to build a driveway entrance attached to it.

It is important to ensure that the shipping container garage is well insulated. If its purpose is that of storage, then the need for insulation is greater. There are several ways of insulation. Perhaps the most common method is using polystyrene sheets. The sheets are usually attached to all the walls as well as the ceiling. Afterward, the gaps are mo0rmally filled with foam insulation. However, if the garage is for vehicles, then there is no great need for insulation.

On that note, it is also important that a dehumidifier is installed. The purpose is to prevent the garage from getting damp.

Why choose a shipping container garage?

Ease of installation

If you are planning to install the garage in an area that is considerably firm and flat, there is no need for any form of construction. All you need to do is place it as it was delivered. On the other hand, if you need to build the foundation stab, then no additional work is required afterward as you can just place the shipping container on the stab as it was delivered to you.

With a shipping co0ntainer garage, the only form of maintenance necessary is checking for rust. This can be done at least once or twice per annum. The reason is to prevent the rust from spreading to other parts of the container. Some owners go as far as to place roofing tar on their containers to enhance durability.

Ease of use

Once the container is installed, there are no instructions on how to use it. All you need are two doors that open at full length or a roll-up door if you need that extra service or if you are using it as a garage for your vehicles. The doors are also easy to lock. In some cases, owners build ramps at the entrance in order to make it easy to move things in and out.

Traditionally, the containers used to be quite cheap. However, over the past half a decade there has been an increase in their prices. The reason is that demand keeps increasing and the manufacturers have also made quite some improvement in their quality. On the other hand, owners have referred to them as being worth the price since they are durable and they can be converted at will.

Room for storage

This is one of the main reasons why more people are going for shipping container garages. There are extremely roomy. A basic shipping container can store up to twenty-four tons. This converts to twenty-one thousand seven hundred and seventy-two kilograms. Basically, one shipping container, with the right foundation can store a tractor or even an entire boat. Isn’t that just amazing!
